  • Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask clarifying questions when faced with a technical problem. Interviewers often appreciate candidates who communicate effectively.
  • Coding Etiquette: Focus on clean, efficient, and well-documented code. Explain your thought process and reasoning as you work through the problem.

Tips for Competency Interviews

A competency-based interview uses questions which aim to find out how you have used specific skills in your previous experience and how you approach problems, tasks and challenges.

The Interviewer will ask you a question such as: Can you give me an example of…. OR Can you tell me about a time when….?

A good way of thinking about your answer is to use the STAR technique below:

  • Situation – What was the situation you faced?
  • Task – What specific goal or task were you assigned?
  • Action – What actions or strategies did you undertake to achieve the task?
  • Results – What was the impact or outcome of your actions?

  • Be honest and authentic - This will help you make a positive impression on interviewers. It's time to be the best version of yourself.
  • The "Tell me about yourself" question should include both personal and professional details. Introduce yourself in a selling or creative way, or follow the style in which the interviewer introduced themselves.
  • HR interviewers usually want to understand your motivation. Be ready to explain what's in it for you.
  • Prepare specific examples from your past experiences that demonstrate relevant skills and qualities.
  • Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses.
  • Be ready to explain your employment history and why you moved on or left each role.
  • It's time to interview your interviewer. Prepare questions that genuinely interest you.
